Key takeaways
- Across networks, Sprout Social's 2026 data points to Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from late morning to late afternoon, and calls Sunday the worst day.
- Buffer's 52 million posts show a different peak for each network: mornings for X and Facebook, late afternoon for LinkedIn, evenings for TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
- Midweek is the safest default on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X; TikTok and long-form YouTube do well at the weekend in Buffer's data.
- All times are in your audience's local time. Use them to choose your first slots, then check each network's own analytics.
There's no single best time to post on social media, but there is a best default: midweek, from late morning to late afternoon, in your audience's local time. Sprout Social's 2026 data puts the overall peak on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and calls Sunday the worst day. Look network by network, though, and the peaks spread out across the day, from 9 a.m. on X to the evening on TikTok.
This guide brings together the two largest 2026 studies, Sprout Social (nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 profiles) and Buffer (more than 52 million posts), in one table and one chart, with a link to the detailed day-by-day guide for each network.

When each network peaks
The chart makes the pattern clear. Sprout Social's peaks sit inside the working day, roughly from noon to 6 p.m., on every network it covers. Buffer's recommended windows are spread out: mornings for X and Facebook, late afternoon into the evening for LinkedIn, evenings for TikTok and YouTube Shorts, and mornings again for long-form YouTube videos.
Is there one best time for every network?
No, and both studies say so: Buffer states plainly that no single best time applies to every platform, because people use each network for different reasons. What does hold across networks:
- Midweek beats the weekend on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X, in both studies.
- The middle of the night is always weak.
- Local time is what counts. Both studies express times in the audience's local time, so a 9 a.m. slot means 9 a.m. where your followers live.
Network by network
Sprout Social sees peaks on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday from 1 to 7 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 9 p.m. and Thursday from noon to 2 p.m., with weak weekends. Buffer's 9.6 million posts rank Thursday at 9 a.m. first and Wednesday as the best day. A Wednesday post around noon sits in the best window of both studies. Full Instagram guide.
Sprout Social's longest peaks run from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Buffer's 14 million Facebook posts favor mornings and evenings, with Thursday at 9 a.m. on top, Wednesday as the best day and Saturday as the quietest. Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m. are supported by both. Full Facebook guide.
TikTok
Sprout Social favors weekday afternoons, with the longest window on Wednesday from 1 to 8 p.m. Buffer's 7.1 million TikTok posts favor evenings from 6 to 11 p.m., rank Sunday at 9 a.m. first and Saturday as the best day. Thursday at 1 p.m. is the only slot both recommend. Full TikTok guide.
Sprout Social's longest peaks are Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Buffer's 4.8 million posts point to 3 to 8 p.m. on weekdays, with Wednesday at 4 p.m. on top. Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 3 p.m. fit both. Full LinkedIn guide.
X (Twitter)
Buffer's best hours are weekday mornings, led by Tuesday at 9 a.m.; Sprout Social's windows run from noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday. They share no slot, so test one of each. Both agree Saturday is the weakest day. Full X guide.
YouTube
Only Buffer covers YouTube: across 1.8 million videos, long-form videos peak in the morning, with Sunday at 10 a.m. on top, while Shorts peak in the evening, with the three best slots on Friday afternoon and evening. Full YouTube guide.
Why the studies disagree
- They answer different questions. Sprout Social measures when engagement happens, counting reactions, comments, shares, messages and clicks. Buffer measures which publishing hour gets the highest median engagement per post.
- They look at different accounts. Sprout Social's data comes from more than 30,000 customers, mostly brands and organizations; Buffer's from posts by creators, small businesses and marketers.
- They cover different periods. Sprout Social's figures come from November 2025 to February 2026; Buffer updated each network's analysis during 2026.
Both are useful. Where they overlap, you have a strong starting slot: Wednesday around noon on Instagram, Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Facebook, Thursday at 1 p.m. on TikTok, Wednesday at 3 p.m. on LinkedIn. Where they don't, as on X, test one slot from each.
How to find your own best times
Every major network shows some version of your audience's activity:
- Instagram: Most active times, in your Instagram Insights.
- Facebook: active times for your Page, in Meta Business Suite.
- TikTok: Follower activity in TikTok Studio, over the last 7 days.
- YouTube: When your viewers are on YouTube, in the Audience tab of YouTube Studio, over the last 28 days.
- LinkedIn and X: no activity chart, so compare the engagement rate of posts published in different slots.
The method is the same everywhere: pick two slots, publish comparable posts in each for four weeks, compare engagement rates, keep the winner and test a new challenger.
Turn best times into a posting schedule
Timing is a multiplier, not a strategy. Even Buffer's data team says that if there were a secret sauce, it would be consistency. A simple system:
- Choose two or three slots per network from this guide.
- Set them as posting time slots in your scheduler. In Wavnil, each channel has its own slots, and new posts drop into the next free one.
- Batch a week of content at a time with a social media content calendar.
- Review your analytics monthly and move the slots that underperform.
Our step-by-step guides show how to schedule on each network: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and X.
Where to start this week
If you post a few times a week, start here: Wednesday around noon on Instagram, Tuesday at 7 p.m. or Wednesday at 6 p.m. on Facebook, Thursday at 1 p.m. on TikTok, Wednesday at 3 p.m. on LinkedIn, Tuesday at 9 a.m. on X, Sunday at 10 a.m. for YouTube videos and Friday evening for Shorts. Try Wavnil free for 7 days to set these slots once and fill them from a single calendar.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to post on social media in 2026?
There's no single time for every network. Across platforms, Sprout Social's 2026 data points to Tuesdays and Wednesdays between late morning and late afternoon (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), in your audience's local time. Buffer's data shows each network peaking at a different time, so plan one schedule per network.
What is the best day to post on social media?
Tuesday and Wednesday in Sprout Social's 2026 data, with Sunday as the worst day. Buffer also ranks Wednesday first on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X. TikTok and YouTube break the pattern: Buffer finds Saturday best for TikTok, Sunday best for long-form YouTube videos and Friday best for Shorts.
What is the worst time to post on social media?
The middle of the night, and in most cases the weekend. Sprout Social calls Sunday the worst day overall and lists early mornings among the weakest times on every network it covers. Buffer finds that weekend posts get less engagement on every platform except TikTok.
Should I post at the same time on every network?
No. The data shows different peaks: X and Facebook do best in the morning in Buffer's data, LinkedIn in the late afternoon, TikTok and YouTube Shorts in the evening. Scheduling tools let you set separate posting slots for each account, so the same content goes out at the right time on each network.
