Facebook Post Size 2026: Image and Video Dimensions

September 29, 2026 · 4 min read · By Wavnil

Key takeaways

  • Feed images: 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) take the most space on phones; 1080 × 1080 (1:1) is the safe all-rounder. Use 1440 × 1800 if the 4:5 image will also run as an ad.
  • Since 2025, Facebook shares videos as Reels: design them at 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Reels published through the API must last 3 to 90 seconds.
  • Link previews: 1200 × 630 pixels (1.91:1), at least 600 × 315 for the large format, 8 MB maximum.
  • Scheduled photo posts go through Meta's API: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP or TIFF up to 4 MB, and PNGs under 1 MB to avoid pixelation.

The best Facebook post size in 2026 is 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) for images you want to stand out on phones, or 1080 × 1080 (1:1) for a safe square. Videos are now shared as Reels, so design them at 1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16), and use 1200 × 630 pixels for link preview images.

Meta doesn't publish a single "post size" for organic posts. The recommendations below combine the specs it does publish, for ads, link previews and its publishing API, into one practical set, checked on September 29, 2026.

Image sizes for Facebook feed posts

Facebook's feed shows images at the full width of the screen, so the height decides how much space a post takes:

  • Portrait 4:5 (1080 × 1350): the tallest feed format and the best way to stop the scroll on a phone. If the same image will run as an ad, export it at 1440 × 1800, Meta's minimum for 4:5 feed ads.
  • Square 1:1 (1080 × 1080): works on every screen, including computers, and matches Meta's minimum for square feed ads.
  • Landscape 1.91:1 (1200 × 630): takes the least space on mobile, but suits wide visuals and matches link previews.

Two export tips: use sRGB colors, and save photos as JPEG and text-heavy graphics as PNG. Meta's API documentation advises keeping PNG files under 1 MB to avoid pixelation, and notes that Facebook resizes images to several dimensions to display them on different screens.

When you add several photos to one post, Facebook arranges them in a collage and may crop some of them to fit. Keep the subject of each photo centered, and use the same ratio for all of them if you want a clean layout.

Video and Reels sizes

In June 2025, Meta announced that all videos uploaded to Facebook would be shared as Reels, with a single publishing flow and no more Reels length or format restrictions, rolled out gradually to profiles and Pages (Meta). So one set of specs now covers most video posts:

  • Size: 1080 × 1920 pixels recommended, 540 × 960 minimum, in 9:16.
  • Frame rate: 24 to 60 fps.
  • Format: MP4, with H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio at 48 kHz, 128 kbps or more.
  • Length through the API: 3 to 90 seconds, with a limit of 30 API-published Reels in any 24-hour period.

Horizontal videos still play, but a vertical video fills the phone screen, which is where most Reels are watched. For length limits across platforms, see how long Reels, TikToks and Shorts can be.

When you share a link, Facebook pulls the preview image from the page's og:image tag. Meta's sharing guidelines recommend:

  • 1200 × 630 pixels for high-resolution screens, and at least 600 × 315 to get the large preview.
  • A ratio as close to 1.91:1 as possible, so the image isn't cropped.
  • 8 MB maximum. The absolute minimum is 200 × 200 pixels, and anything under 600 × 315 is shown much smaller.

If a preview looks wrong, the website's image tag is usually the culprit: fix the og:image on the page, then refresh the preview with Meta's Sharing Debugger before sharing again.

Facebook Story size

Facebook Stories use the same vertical canvas as Instagram Stories: 1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16). Your name appears at the top and the reply bar at the bottom, so keep text out of those areas. Our Instagram Story size guide details the safe zones, and the same margin logic applies on Facebook.

Sizes for scheduled Facebook posts

Scheduling tools, Wavnil included, publish to Facebook Pages through Meta's Graph API, which adds a few constraints (Meta for Developers):

  • Photos: JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF or TIFF, up to 4 MB; PNGs under 1 MB to avoid pixelation.
  • Reels: MP4, 9:16, 3 to 90 seconds, up to 30 per 24 hours through the API.
  • Pages only: third-party tools can't post to personal profiles or groups; our guide on how to schedule Facebook posts explains the options.

Captions matter as much as images: check the social media character limits and write in a font that stands out with our Facebook fonts generator.

Your Facebook post size checklist

Use 1080 × 1350 for portrait images, 1080 × 1080 for squares, 1080 × 1920 for Reels and Stories, and 1200 × 630 for link previews. Export JPEGs under 4 MB if you schedule, then post when your audience is active: see the best time to post on Facebook. Try Wavnil free for 7 days to plan a month of Facebook posts in one sitting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for a Facebook post?

For images, 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait) takes the most space in the mobile feed, and 1080 × 1080 (1:1) is a safe square that works everywhere. For videos, use 1080 × 1920 (9:16), since Facebook now shares videos as Reels. For link previews, use 1200 × 630 pixels.

What size is a Facebook Reel?

1080 × 1920 pixels in a 9:16 ratio, with 540 × 960 as the minimum and a frame rate of 24 to 60 fps. Reels published through Meta's API, as scheduling tools do, must last 3 to 90 seconds. In the app, Meta has been removing Reels length limits since it started sharing all videos as Reels in 2025.

Why are my Facebook photos blurry?

Facebook resizes and compresses every image. Upload photos at least 1080 pixels wide, in sRGB, as JPEGs for photos and PNGs for graphics with text. Meta's API documentation also advises keeping PNG files under 1 MB to avoid pixelation, and very small images always look soft once enlarged.

What size is a Facebook Story?

1080 × 1920 pixels, the same 9:16 vertical format as Instagram Stories. The top of the screen shows your name and the bottom shows the reply bar, so keep text and logos away from both edges, and let the background fill the whole frame.
